Description

1991–1993 Dodge Ram 5.9L First Gen Cummins High Performance Aluminum Radiator — 68mm Four-Row Extruded Tube Core

The first-generation Cummins earned its keep pulling loads the gas trucks could not, and three decades later most of them are still working. The cooling system was sized for a truck that was new. Between trailer weight, summer grades, and original cores that have been scaling up internally since these trucks left the line, the factory radiator ran out of margin a long time ago. This is a direct-fit aluminum replacement for the 1991–1993 intercooled 12-valve trucks, built with more core than the engine can load up.

The core is a four-row extruded tube design, 68mm deep. Extruded tube matters on a diesel. Each tube is drawn as a single seamless section of aluminum with heavier wall thickness than conventional folded and welded tube, so there is no seam to fatigue under the pressure cycling and vibration a solid-mounted inline-six puts into everything around it. Four rows of tube across the full 68mm depth put more coolant in contact with more surface area on every pass through the core.

The fins are 5mm, and the fins are where the heat actually leaves. The tubes carry the coolant, but the fin pack does the rejection: heat conducts out of the tube walls into the fins and off into the airstream. The 5mm fin adds cooling surface area across the full 68mm depth of the core, putting more metal to work as a heatsink and transferring more heat out of every pass of air through it.

This is a direct bolt-in for the 1991–1993 Dodge D/W trucks with the intercooled 5.9L Cummins, using the factory mounting points and hose connections. Competing aluminum radiators for this application are built with 8mm fins on a 56mm-deep core. This one runs 5mm fins on a 68mm core: smaller fins packed across a deeper core put more cooling surface area in the airstream and pull more heat out of the coolant on every pass.
